What is a Cleft Palate?

A cleft palate is a treatable birth defect where the roof of the baby's mouth (palate) does not develop normall during pregnancy. The infant is born with an opening (cleft) in the palate that may go through to the nasal cavity. Surgery can close the hole and greatly reduce or eliminate problems with feeding, speech, and hearing.
