What is a Barium Enema?

A barium enema is a lower gastrointestinal X-ray examination of the large intestine, colon and rectum. To make the intestine visible on an X-ray, the colon is filled with a material containing barium. The barium-filled colon shows up clearly on the X-ray picture.
