What Was the Gadsden Purchase?

The Gadsden Purchase was named after James Gadsden, the American Ambassador to Mexico at the time of the purchase. The purchase refers to a 29,670 square mile land purchase in current day southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. The land was purchased by the United States in a treaty ratified by the U.S. Senate on April 25, 1854, and was to be used for the construction of the transcontinental railroad.
