How do I Cite the Bible?

There are a number of different guidelines to citing the Bible. In general, books and versions of the Bible are not underlined, italicized, or in quotation marks. Titles of specific published editions of the Bible are, however, underlined or italicized. When referencing specific chapters and verses, within a document, usually a parenthetical reference (surrounded by parentheses) is used to cite the passage. The titles of the books of the Bible are often abbreviated. A period is used to separate the chapter and verse. Here is an example: (2 Tim. 1.7). When referring to a particular version of the Bible, the first time include the name of the version, followed by a comma. Here is an example of this reference: (King James Version, Phil. 4.19).
