Etymology is the study of the origin of a word and it's real meaning. For example. This can be done by breaking the word into parts. For example, if the parts of the word hippopotamus are studied, according to ancient Greek the word hippos means horse and potamus means river. So, the literal meaning of hippopotamus is river horse.
