To use etc., an abbreviation for et cetera, in a sentence, you need to be listing a lot of things but not have enough room for all of them. For example: There are a lot of rights guaranteed by the Constitution. The right to bear arms, the right to assembly, the right to free speech, etc., are all guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.
