The idea for CDs was actually based on Laserdisc technology. The companies Sony and Philips collaborated in the late 1970's to form a task force to design a new audio disc. The task force was led by Kees Schouhamer Immink and Toshitada Doi. After about a year of work, they came up with the compact disc.
