He dropped out of Harvard to form Microsoft with friend Paul Allen. They started by writing a BASIC language compiler for Altair computers out of Bill's garage in Arizona. Eventually they received a contract to write a form of DOS for IBM. Later they worked again with IBM to write OS/2. This work allowed them to gain the knowledge to write Windows their flagship product. From there they used tough tactics to takeover most software markets much to the dislike of other competitors and the federal government.
