Cartography, or map making, is an ages old art. As far as we know, the earliest map was drawn by the Sumerians on a small clay tablet in the 3rd millenium BC.With paper being flat and the Earth being round, making a map tends to distort the area being mapped. There are different projections to use to accomplish the desired task at hand. Different types of users of a map will dictate which type of projection a map maker will use.
